Leaders in child and adolescent psychiatry

The mission of our Division is to protect the lives and well-being of children and families through the prevention and treatment of child and adolescent mental health conditions.  We have contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge on social determinants of health, and commit ourselves to continuing that work. We hold deeply that racism and all forms of bigotry are toxic to human development–biologically, interpersonally, and socially. Our work is firmly grounded in the belief that the voices and stories of Black children and families, which are too often muted, should be heard, valued, and understood.  This validation can only truly be accomplished by the recognition of the transgenerational impact of centuries of injustice, and by squarely facing the systemic racism within our country and institution. We acknowledge our responsibility to exercise self-reflection in order to best serve as guardians of the mental health of children of all backgrounds. Our Division commits itself to seeking out the hidden and not so hidden places where the burden of racial inequality, bias, and privilege exacts its toll on the human brain, mind and behavioral development, and to exercise zero tolerance for any practice that is racist either by action or by lack of action. We refuse to accept any outcome of our work that maintains disparity on the basis of race or ethnicity.
